The Thermal Hydraulics Analysis & Engineering Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus on developing and validating complex models for reactor and experiment simulations. Work products are anticipated to be developing or refining approaches for developing and qualifying advanced reactor technologies and supporting experiment design based on thermal hydraulic and energy conversion performance modeling. As a postdoctoral researcher, the focus is on developing deep technical expertise essential to the success of complex experimental programs.
There are a several possible projects that require this skillset including contributing to:
- model development of complex thermal hydraulic systems;
- methodologies to set fuel performance limits for a range of micro and advanced reactor applications based on application of historical data to new designs;
- design, analysis and sponsoring of irradiation testing experiments intended to probe the transient performance of nuclear systems; and
- Apply modern best estimate plus uncertainty (BEPU), uncertainty quantification (UQ), and sensitivity analysis (SA) techniques.
Project selection will be based on candidate skillset and research interests with multiple positions available. Based on the nature of the projects, the candidate is expected to be a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team that is capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a larger multifunctional team. The position includes writing scientific manuscripts for journal publication, and presentation of research results at national and international conferences and meetings.
- Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or comparable discipline; must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years.
- Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills.
- familiarity with comparison of models to experimental data;
- experience with experiment design;
- thermo-mechanical modeling applying finite element or other numerical methods;
- knowledge of a system code such as RELAP5-3D and TRACE;
- knowledge of experiment scaling theory (such as for example Dynamic System Scaling (DSS), representativity or Physical Coverage Mapping (PCM));
- computer code assessment, validation and uncertainty quantification by comparing code results to experimental results.
Must be a US Citizen or a Legal Permanent Resident. This position is subject to export control restrictions per the Department of Energy. For this reason, you must be either a US Citizen or a US Green Card holder to qualify for the job. DOE and INL will review and approve the selected candidate post offer acceptance.
