SPACE OPERATIONS ENGINEER, CREW OPERATIONS DEVELOPMENT

The SpaceX Space Operations Team is expanding the world's human spaceflight capability and revolutionizing human spaceflight operations. The team is responsible for all facets of the safe and efficient transport of astronauts and cargo in space and their safe return home.

As a Space Operations Engineer on the Crew Operations Development team, you will envision and create new astronaut operations for future missions, conduct the detailed procedure development for our flight crew, and help drive improvement across the existing fleet. You will learn how to fly the Dragon spacecraft from SpaceX's Mission Control Center and will work directly with SpaceX engineers, operators, and flight crews to prepare for and execute missions.

Spacecraft operations require mental dexterity, rigorous technical understanding of the spacecraft's systems, and a deep understanding of contingency scenarios. You will be responsible for successfully executing human spaceflight missions and for achieving our goal of making life interplanetary.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop new, and enhance existing, astronaut operations in coordination with SpaceX responsible engineers
  • Translate operations into procedures, flight rules, and other real-time products for future Dragon and Starship missions
  • Use YAML and command line environments to write operations products for SpaceX's touchscreen crew displays
  • Use Python or other software languages to drive enhancements to operations
  • Support mission preparations as the expert for crew systems
  • Serve as a face of SpaceX and the Space Operations team with flight crew, as well as technical and programmatic contacts at SpaceX and NASA
  • Train for and operate Dragon missions
  • Develop, champion, and lead special projects to advance the state of SpaceX operations
  • Identify automation opportunities to fly each mission more simply than the last

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in engineering test, integration, or flight operations for complex systems (industry internships and project teams qualify)
  • Real time operations experience on a complex system that has high consequences in the event of failure (such as pilot, flight test engineer, spacecraft operator, high performance automotive, etc.)
  • 2+ years of experience utilizing software tools to solve complex problems (Python, C++, JavaScript, etc.)
  • Previous experience in one or more of the following fields:
    • Environmental and life support systems
    • Avionics and software systems
    • Fluid systems and fluid dynamics
    • Mechanisms and kinematics
    • Communication systems and electromagnetism

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in an engineering or science discipline
  • 2+ years of experience independently owning large projects and leading interdisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated ability to distill step by step operations from amorphous mission objectives and assumed physical and cognitive mission tasks
  • Technical knowledge of spacecraft systems and operations (e.g. life support systems, communications, orbital mechanics, avionics, propulsion, thermal control)
  • Knowledge of basic orbital mechanics
  • Strong written and verbal communication of technical information
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and be resilient in the face of technical challenges
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to decompose ambiguous tasks into tangible and measurable intermediate goals
  • Insatiable hunger for continuous improvement and innovation
  • Previous experience in a customer-facing role working through design requirements, test acceptance, and verification (a bonus for working with a government customer such as NASA)
  • Previous experience working with interdisciplinary teams to solve complex problems
  • Self-motivated with proven leadership skills
  • Able to effectively manage numerous projects and tasks at a time, while meeting aggressive deadlines

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Flexibility required including long hours and weekend work when necessary to support operations and critical project timelines
  • Position is subject to pre-employment drug and random drug and alcohol testing
