Research Specialist - Pedram Lab Relevant Educational Qualifications Job3 months ago - Medical / Healthcare Jobs - Ashburn - 140 views
Janelia Research Campus is a pioneering research center in Ashburn, Virginia, where scientists pursue fundamental questions in neuroscience and imaging. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) launched Janelia in 2006, establishing an intellectually distinctive environment for scientists to do creative, collaborative, hands-on work. Our integrated teams of biologists, computational scientists, and tool-builders pursue a small number of scientific questions with potential for transformative impact. We share our methods, results, and tools with the scientific community. It is a uniquely innovative and collaborative atmosphere that reflects HHMI's reputation for excellence.
We have an opportunity for a Research Specialist to join the Pedram Lab at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Research Campus in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The Pedram Lab has two broad aims. First, we are interested in developing tools to study the glycocalyx- the dense coat of sugars, also called glycans, found on the surface of every cell in the human body. The complexity of the pathways responsible for assembly of glycans from monosaccharide units poses a challenge to genetic approaches for predictably modulating glycocalyx properties. We will use small molecule probes and protein biosensors coupled with advanced light and electron microscopy approaches to meet this challenge and provide insight into an underexplored aspect of cellular physiology and pathology. Our second aim is to leverage the unique properties of cellular glycosylation to provide new techniques for cell biologists and physiologists studying their systems of interest. More information about the Pedram lab can be found here: (please use the apply button below) .
The successful candidate will play a significant experimental role in advancing research objectives. Projects range from method development and process optimization to application of new tools to problems with relevance to human health. Ideal candidates are drawn to solving difficult problems, and place deep value in the intellectual and operational freedom provided by this position. Compensation is designed to be commensurate with positions in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, with secure funding for 5 years.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Independently perform experiments to advance research objectives, in some cases without clear literature precedence or technical guidelines.
Diligently and accurately record efforts and findings.
Discuss work with principal investigator and the rest of the team. Provide substantive intellectual input to experimental design and/or research directions.
Stay up to date on project-relevant and field-specific literature.
Contribute to the preparation of papers for publication. Present ongoing work to colleagues and/or at academic conferences.
Supervise junior lab members.
Participate in teams across different disciplines. Disseminate new protocols and acquired expertise, and in turn, benefit from the expertise of others.
Ph.D. in chemical biology, chemistry, biology, or related fields (e.g., neuroscience, bioengineering, chemical engineering, biophysics) is preferred. However, individuals with master's degrees and a strong record of prior accomplishment will be considered.
Post-doctoral experience is not required. Individuals who plan to receive doctoral degrees in 2021 are encouraged to apply. Candidates with varying degrees of post-doctoral and/or industry experience are also encouraged to apply. Title and salary will be adjusted according to experience.
Skills and Abilities
Core competency in electron microscopy, advanced light microscopy, protein engineering, synthetic chemistry, glycoscience, and/or neuroscience is preferred.
Collaborative and collegial attitude toward staff at all levels.
Please submit a brief cover letter, your CV, and names/contact information for 3 references with your application. And please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions: (see application details)
