Job Summary

The Project Manager will serve as a member of the Project Management team focused on supporting the implementation of CWP projects. The Project Manager will report to the Director, Project Management and work with the team to maintain productive and professional work relationships with project partners, professors and teams, and to effectively manage projects so as to maximize their impact.


  • Works closely with the Director, Project Management and Associate Director to manage a set of assigned CWP projects.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with CWP staff, Columbia University faculty, staff and students, internal/external stakeholders and partners in all areas related to CWP project implementation. Serves as a point of contact for the progress of assigned projects.
  • Works with the Director and Associate Director to review newly approved projects. Develops and executes project launch plans. Ensures that projects maintain alignment with parameters received from CWP leadership and all applicable Columbia University policies governing the conduct of research at the University and the management of programs.
  • For assigned projects, develops and implements detailed work-plan and budget that includes the use of performance indicators to ensure effective project monitoring, evaluation and disclosure.
  • Manages the establishment of systems, protocols and processes to best support the effective implementation of the projects.
  • Oversees project expenditures and work closely with the Budget Manager, Projects to monitor project budgets, submit budget amendments for approval, and ensure proper and accurate reporting.
  • Works with the Budget Manager, Projects and relevant Columbia University administrative departments in the establishment of required contracts. Support project related procurements as needed.
  • Develops project descriptions, reports and proposals, and work closely with the CWP communications, grants and development teams on the preparation of project-related materials for communications and fundraising.
  • Assists in the recruitment and hiring of postdocs, research assistants, student casuals, CWP project management staff and consultants as needed.
  • Develops partner agreements including Memoranda of Understanding and letters of agreement in order to clearly delineate roles and responsibilities among partners and collaborating entities.
  • Engages with the Columbia University Office of General Counsel, Sponsored Projects Administration, Sponsored Projects Finance, and Office of Alumni Development, philanthropies, foundations and other supporters of the University.
  • Additional duties as assigned.


Bachelor’s degree required. 5-7 years of related experience required.

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working with an academic institution and/or a not for profit agency preferred. Past experience working on an international project and/or living/working in another country preferred.
  • Project management experience preferred.


  • The incumbent should be people-oriented, with demonstrated evidence of highly collaborative communication and strong interpersonal skills, and should be committed and open to working with diverse communities and organizations.
  • The incumbent must have outstanding organizational and time management skills, be extremely detail-oriented, and be able to thrive in a high-volume, entrepreneurial environment; a demonstrated ability to track projects over time at varying degrees of detail and adhere to project deadlines; an ability to build a network of contacts and interact effectively with people at varying organizational levels; strong oral and written communication skills; and the ability to quickly and effectively write media collateral, emails and other communications.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating events in diverse, complex environments. Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook are required.
  • Domestic and international travel may be required for the support of individual projects.
