The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research associate working in the Advanced Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) and Characterization Directorate at the Materials and Fuels complex of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).
INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development and fabrication through post irradiation analysis.
Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research involving the study of axial gas communication in different types of fuel rods, with emphasis on Light Water reactor (LWR) rod design. In this position you will assist in the design and fabrication of a new experimental apparatus to determine axial gas communication in fuel rods simulating different operating and burnup conditions. You will evaluate the simulated material properties at a wide range of scales necessary to elucidate the physics of observed phenomena. Incorporation of performance data into applicable modeling and simulation tools will be encouraged. You will be responsible for publication of research results in internal reports and the open literature. Individuals are sought with background and knowledge of fuel performance issues and background on fission gas behavior. The candidate also has opportunities to be involved with the post irradiation examination (PIE) of different irradiated nuclear materials, from nuclear structural materials such as cladding and structural components, and various fuel forms to support LWRs and advanced reactors. The candidate also has opportunity to be converted to full time staff after the two year appointment based on performance.
- PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years
- PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or comparable disciplines
- Demonstrated oral and published written communication skills in English
- Expertise in nuclear materials, nuclear cladding performance or components dealing with the nuclear fuel cycle. Willingness to expand knowledge in fuel performance modeling is requested.
- Excellent publication record in peer reviewed journals
- Successful record of writing and being awarded research grants
- Ability to be a strong team player and effectively organize and lead tasks
- Relevant experience working in a research laboratory environment
- Previous experience in advanced image analysis is a plus.
