Responsible for monitoring accounts to ensure that all Medicare and contracted managed Medicare bad debt cost reporting (MBDCR) entries are thoroughly researched, properly identified, and recorded with appropriate procedure codes on a timely basis. All necessary corrections/adjustments are made to ensure that the patient’s account is stated correctly.
Reviews daily cash posting transaction report to identify zero payments, contractual posting errors, denials, retraction and/or underpayments, late charges, amounts deemed not payable by the payor and recoveries on bad debt accounts.
Maintains a working knowledge of Medicare Bad Debt Rules and Regulations along with knowledge of Medicare payment systems (DRG, APC, Fee-for-service)
Applies corrections to patient demographics, charges, adjustments and payments
Reviews accounts based off of a set list of standards to qualify an account to be eligible for the Medicare Bad Debt log verifying all government and third party payers’ regulatory mandated requirements for collection were followed
Appropriately identifies errors on the logs and/or accounts and accurately fixes the error
Evaluates and resolves residual balances (credits/debits) on accounts preparing refunds as identified
Initiate refund to patients, insurance companies, and third parties by following the established refund procedures.
Correspond with insurance companies, patients, third parties, etc. to resolve payment and refund request issues/delays via telephone and written correspondence.
High school diploma or equivalent Required
Two years of college Preferred
Associate’s degree Preferred
Minimum Required Work Experience
One (1) year healthcare revenue cycle
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
Requires critical thinking skills, problem solving, decisive judgment, ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
