The research conducted under the BES-EFRC strongly supports INL's nuclear energy mission while expanding the Office of Science (OS) portfolio of the Laboratory.
Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Materials Science and Engineering Department (MSED)is seeking forward-thinking, professionals interested in exploring a technical career as an Applied Physicist!
The MSED at the INL seeks to fill a research scientist position in the area of actinide thin film and heterostructure synthesis and characterization. The position requires a strong background in strongly correlated electron systems, heterostructure design, pump-probe spectroscopy techniques, quantum materials, and a thorough understanding of condensed matter physics (CMP). A strong publication record in these areas demonstrating both a familiarity with the current state of the art as well as strength in technical writing and communicating is required. Candidates with strong hands-on expertise in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are preferred to support new synthesis capabilities currently being developed. This position will be supported through US DOE, OS, Basic Energy Sciences (BES), the INL-led Center for Thermal Energy Transport Under Irradiation (TETI), and Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC). The Center brings together an internationally recognized team of experimentalists and computational materials theorists. Collaboration between the Center's team is encouraged to develop a common intellectual basis for all personnel.
- Be an active contributor within a team of scientists and engineers to design, synthesize, and characterize heterostrucutred materials (including actinides) using MBE.
- Investigate novel material properties resulting from strong electron correlation and quantum effects using a variety of experimental approaches.
- Collaborate with research partners at other Universities and Laboratories to meet the needs of a large BES research Center.
- Work with new equipment from installation through troubleshooting, calibrating, and maintenance.
- Developing SOPs and communicating with equipment suppliers to address needs and problems.
- Conducting and documenting work at an appropriate quality level, collecting and interpreting laboratory data, planning research tasks, assessing and applying a wide range of research techniques to those tasks.
- Lead and contribute to winning proposals in allied or new areas of research.
- Doctorate in CMP or closely related field.
